4-October-2023
Drawing inspiration from the gardens of the famous Villa Noailles, the house with intertwined double Cs has infused the festive spirit of summer into a chic and vibrant wardrobe.
Two days before the fashion show, Chanel always releases a teaser of its collection. A video by the photography duo Inez&Vinoodh unveils the essence of the runway. So, this season, the focus is on Villa Noailles. This masterpiece of modernist architecture, designed at the request of Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles by Robert Mallet-Stevens, overlooks the town of Hyères and is celebrating its centenary this year. A place steeped in history, now an icon of modernity, it hosts the Hyères Festival of Fashion, Photography, and Accessories every year, an international event dedicated to young talent, in which Chanel has been a partner since 2014.
Postcard from Summer
Inside the Grand Palais Éphémère on Place Joffre, the walls were adorned on Tuesday with oversized colorful flower panels, offering an ideal postcard of summer in the gardens of Villa Noailles overlooking the bay. It was quite hot inside the show, which welcomes front-row celebrities and prominent ambassadors of the house. In the race for celebrities who attend every fashion show, Chanel is among the top houses that attract worldwide attention: Penélope Cruz, Riley Keough, Usher, Brie Larson, Amandla Stenberg, and Jennie from Blackpink take their seats. Paris Hilton, the pop star of this season in Paris, was also present, seated with the Parisian Chanel girls, including Inès de la Fressange, Caroline de Maigret, Lyna Khoudri, Charlotte Casiraghi, Rebecca Marder, Anna Mouglalis, Anamaria Vartolomei, and Marine Vacht.
Beachwear Couture
The collection tells the story of a cool young girl who spends her summer in villas bathed in light and goes out in pop and couture-inspired beachwear outfits (Paris Hilton should love it). 'Sophistication and relaxation, tweed that runs throughout the collection, sportswear, and lace: I sought to bring together opposites around the coolest spirit. And for that, the gardens and pool of Villa Noailles, with its exceptional setting, are quite suitable,' explains Virginie Viard, the artistic director of Chanel's fashion collections, in her note.
Tweed and Flip Flops on Their Feet
This summer, the Chanel girls will stroll along the beach or by the pool in one-piece swimsuits in pop pink or midnight blue, worn under multicolored robe capes and black flip-flops on their feet (the standout flip-flop of the season). For the city, it will be flat ballet pumps and a tailored jacket with an asymmetrical tweed mini skirt that reveals the legs. A pleated sun top, striped Bermuda shorts, jeans fastened with a pearl belt, and a casually tied sweater at the waist—all exude elegance but in the most perfect nonchalance. She also layers her chain necklaces over her black and white striped cotton tank tops edged with bubblegum pink and then goes for a short dress, lace pants, or a ruffled blouse.
Ode to Freedom
Bouquets of flowers and pastel checkered patchworks accentuate her summer look, the nautical stripes that appear everywhere, even down to the ankle socks, remind us she's by the seaside, while the transparency of her dresses, shirts, petticoats, or bralettes worn with two-toned light blue and black boots sets the rhythm for her starry evenings. Golden chain sunglasses complete this free and joyful wardrobe. In the end, Jeannette's "Porque Te Vas," a chart-topping hit in France in the summer of 1976, plays. Like a catchy tune that makes you want to rediscover the joy of having fun and dressing up to dance by the Mediterranean shore.
