The absence of color has taken over the runways during the recent Fashion Weeks, making it the star of the 2024 season.
Next year will be as white as snow, as predicted by the Spring-Summer 2024 collections showcased during the latest Fashion Week. From New York to London, Milan to Paris, this color - which technically isn't a color at all - has been spotted in numerous collections. It appeared on essentials such as a tank top from Sabato de Serno's debut collection for Gucci, an oversized t-shirt from Valentino, or a poplin shirt designed by Ann Demeulemeester. The numbers back it up: according to a recent report by Tagwalk, a fashion data specialist, the white dress was one of the key elements of the Spring-Summer 2024 season, with a 13% increase compared to the previous season.
What does the return of white signify?
Less color, more depth: this sudden return of white is a direct reference to quiet luxury, a trend that has been prominent in the fashion scene for several seasons. This means cleaner lines, the absence of logos, and, in essence, white allows the focus to be on the garment and its craftsmanship, distancing itself from more superficial codes. It's a return to the essentials centered around distinguished and elegant looks: from pristine lace at Chloé, a 1960s-inspired silhouette seen at Versace's runway show, to the floral accents on Valentino's dresses. This pure and evocative shade even overshadows the Barbie pink madness: according to Tagwalk, there's been a 21% decrease in silhouettes adorned with this color. All of this serves to prevent the "blank page" syndrome in the world of fashion.
