Dior's Spring-Summer 2024 Haute Couture Show: A Blend of Poetry and Pragmatism

The luxury house presented its spring-summer 2024 haute couture show on Monday at the Rodin Museum in Paris, featuring a collection filled with poetry and pragmatism.
Elevating material is a core theme for Maria Grazia Chiuri. We find her on this first day of haute couture week with a new spring-summer 2024 show, continuing her approach of eschewing the superfluous in her couture creations. This long-term conversation, led by Dior's artistic director, also highlights women's art. Here, a massive installation by Italian artist Isabella Ducrot shines a light on monumental dresses echoing the pieces of Ottoman sultans, laden with symbolic power.
For decades, this textile expert, now 91 years old, created artworks full of poetry – on canvas, mixed media on paper, or fabrics – but always in the shadows. Five years ago, there was a turning point: her work was thrust onto the international stage by a gallerist and gained renown.
Moving Sculptures
On the runway, Maria Grazia Chiuri's creations resonate with the work of Isabella Ducrot. The Italian designer avoids extravagance, instead skillfully utilizing the power of cut, drape, perfect fit, and the needlework technique that reflects the delicate and precise handiwork of the Chanakya workshop embroiderers in India.
The silhouettes move like sculptures in motion. They seek a pure line and express a high priestess presence, notably in neoclassical armor trench coats enhanced with clever pleats. In a palette of neutral tones - sand, gold, navy, burgundy, and black - Maria Grazia Chiuri parades pleated skirts with Bar jackets, showcasing a New Look version for 2024, a coat with delicately embroidered three-quarter sleeves, and vestal dresses. The models wear pumps that underline the refined work concealing a remarkable construction play. The excellence of the couture artisans is thus illustrated in the precision of these dresses' cuts, which fall cleanly and become like a second skin.
