Makeup and Exercise: Navigating the Complex Relationship

For some, the idea of going makeup-free to the gym is unthinkable. However, the combination of makeup and sweat raises questions about its compatibility. Experts shed light on the matter.
Social media is flooded with gym selfies, where celebrities and influencers flaunt their flawless appearance and makeup during workout sessions. Despite the allure, it's generally advised to forego heavy makeup during exercise to avoid potential skin issues.

Letting Skin Breathe and Sweat
Dr. Élisabeth Berrissoul, a dermatologist, warns that physical exertion dilates pores, allowing the skin to absorb makeup chemicals more readily. This can lead to breakouts, especially for those with acne-prone or combination skin. Moreover, exercising with makeup on can impede the beneficial aspects of sweating, such as the elimination of bodily toxins, hence the recommendation for 'makeup-free' detoxifying breaks during workouts. Consequently, it's advised to avoid foundation, concealer, blush, bronzer, and highlighters to let the skin breathe effectively.
Makeup Adaptations
For those unwilling to part with their makeup, there are exceptions. Dr. Berrissoul acknowledges that waterproof mascara or tinted lip balm could be suitable. For complexion, a light BB cream or tinted moisturizer is preferable, ideally opting for "gym-friendly" formulas designed to let the skin breathe and maintain pigment durability during physical exertion. However, depending on the workout's intensity, the makeup may not stay perfect throughout the session.
Addressing severe skin issues with a physician takes precedence over covering them with makeup, as per the dermatologist’s advice.
Essential Skincare Routine
Maintaining a beauty regimen is crucial for those regularly engaging in physical activity. Dr. Berrissoul emphasizes two key steps: thoroughly removing makeup before exercising and applying moisturizer post-shower. A hydrating mist can also offer temporary relief for overheated skin. Those with dry or sensitive skin might consider a light moisturizer before working out.
Outdoor enthusiasts, like runners or hikers, should use a sensitive skin serum, a moisturizing cream with SPF, and sunscreen on exposed areas like the neck, shoulders, and legs, as suggested by fitness coach Lucile Woodward.
