7-May-2024
Dating back to 1948 and originally known as the Costume Institute Gala, the Met Gala is hosted every year on the first Monday of the month of May. Primarily, it is hosted as fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and it is renowned as the most prestigious event for Hollywood and the fashion industry, often referred to as “Fashion’s Biggest Night”.
The Met Gala attracts Celebrities, designers and high-profile figures from different industries as attendees dress according to a certain theme set by the Costume’s Institute’s exhibition.
While this year's exhibit is "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion"—which explores four centuries of archival pieces in innovative, multi-sensory formats—the theme of the gala itself is "The Garden of Time," inspired by a J.G Ballard 1962 short story that explores humanity's relationship to creation and destruction. This story “Garden of Time” was heavily romantic and poetic, fantastical and realistic in its essence as it portrayed the forcible passing of time and the toll it engraves in all living things.
This year's event was co-chaired by Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth, Zendaya and Bad Bunny, and as, every year, Vogue's Anna Wintour was emceeing the Costume Institute Awards.
Wild hairstyles, see-through dresses and floral motifs on haute couture costumes had all been paraded in front of the cameras within just minutes of the event kicking off.
