The US is currently witnessing a series of protests and riots after the death of George Floyd, an African American, who was killed by the Minneapolis police while trying to arrest him, unarmed. A curfew was imposed in many US cities to stop the violence and riot that have been going on these last days, however, protesters have ignored the curfew, which resulted in more violent confrontations in New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.
Celebrities expressed their anger about Floyd’s death and about the system’s racism. As for Hollywood couple, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, they announced on Sunday that they donated $200K to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
Reynolds and Lively posted a joint statement on Instagram saying: “We’ve never had to worry about preparing our kids for different rules of law or what might happen if we’re pulled over in the car. We don’t know what it’s like to experience that life day in and day out. We can’t imagine feeling that kind of fear and anger. We’re ashamed that in the past we’ve allowed ourselves to be uninformed about how deeply rooted systemic racism is.”
“We’re committed to raising our kids so they never grow up feeding this insane pattern and so they’ll do their best to never inflict pain on another being consciously or unconsciously,” they added.
Ryan and Blake made sure that this donation is an honor to every person who was victim of racism: “It’s the least we can do to honor not just George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and Eric Garner, but all the black men and women who have been killed when the camera wasn’t rolling.”
