Jane Fonda Leads Gucci’s New Sustainable Collection

The 82-year old actress has become one of Gucci’s faces of its eco-friendly collection, which is part of a big sustainable plan set by Gucci in 2015, after Alessandro Michele took over its artistic direction.

For the first time in Gucci’s history, the Italian label is launching a full sustainable collection embodied by Jane Fonda, who is known as an environmental activist. Alongside the American actress, we also find in this campaign, which is directed by Harmony Korine, rapper Lil Nas X, singers King Princess and Miyavi, and David Mayer de Rothschild, who is a British adventurer and environmentalist.

This line titled “Off Grid”, which includes unisex ready-to-wear clothes, accessories, and luggage items, is made from natural, organic and recycled materials, including Econyl®, nylon made from fishing nets and recycled rugs.

“The collection is the result of teamwork; everybody brought something to it,"

explains artistic director Alessandro Michele, who has worked on the Italian label for a more sustainable fashion since 2015. It took 10 years to the Italian label to reduce its environmental impact by 40% while reducing its carbon footprint by 50%. This goal was supported by Kering, the parent company of Gucci. In August 2019, the luxury group made a little commitment to the environment by launching the Fashion Pact, signed by 147 brands including H&M, Nike et Zara, which pledged reducing single-use plastic in order to limit ocean pollution, restore biodiversity by protecting species or even achieve zero net of CO² emissions by 2050 to refrain climate change.

Gucci is following the right track in order to achieve this goal. By the end of May, amid the health crisis of Covid-19, Alessandro Michele announced that the Italian luxury brand is stepping away from Milan Fashion Week, as part of a decision to reduce the number of fashion shows it holds each year from five to two.

“Off The Grid” collection launched by Gucci, will be part of “Gucci Circular Lines” program, which is based on a new vision “Circularity is not the exception for the design and creation, but is integrated within the process.”
