The Kardashians copy her cycling shorts, Emily Ratajkowski her little off shoulders dresses and Hailey Bieber her high-waist jeans ... the nineties wardrobe of Princess Diana is fashionable more than ever.
More than 20 years after her death, Diana Spencer still amazes everyone with her style. The biggest proof is her new biography movie directed by Pablo Larraín, revealed by Deadline, which announced that Kristen Stewart will interpret her role in the film called “Spencer” named after Diana’s last name. The Chilean filmmaker plans to focus on a weekend in the 1990s, one where the Princess of Wales decided to end her marriage to Prince Charles and give up on becoming a queen.
However, her style improved after this breakup, as she was free from royal protocols, revealing her legs, neckline, and shoulders; she had a free wardrobe choices.
The Princess of Wales evolves towards a defined silhouette, trendy pieces like the oversized blazer, the sweatshirt with a vintage logo, the wide high-waist jeans, the cycling shorts, and even the balloon sleeves ... So many clothes to prove that Diana is a free woman.
Her style is rooted in the 90’s fashion and keeps on being an inspiration till today. On the catwalks, we can see a lot of glimpse of the Princess of Wales. Also on Instagram, the number of accounts dedicated to her 90s looks are uncountable. Not to forget the tributes to her looks, just like the French edition of Vogue which showed Hailey Bieber reproducing lady D’s most iconic outfits of the nineties.
Cycling Shorts
The Princess of Wales opted for the cycling shorts as a way to express her freedom when she had been separated from Prince Charles. She was spotted in the cycling shorts for her aerobics class, paired with white socks. At a time when sportswear is experiencing a great return of hype, many designers are getting their inspiration from her. On the catwalks, this practical piece returns to heckle the urban wardrobe. For instance; loose men's shirts, large suit jackets or even high heel boots. In 2020, it is about changing what a sporty outfit looks like and rebalancing the fitted cycling shorts by choosing an oversized top.
Vintage Sweater
Princess Diana used to put her sweatshirts on to go to the Harbor Club, a gym she used to visit in Chelsea area of London, or to take her son William to play on the lawn of the Guards Polo Club. The outfit would consist of high-waist jeans, a fleece sweatshirt and a blazer with wide shoulders. However, two details are not to be missed: the cap and the hands in pockets.
It is a laid-back attitude combined with a style sense which is adopted by influencers on Instagram, who are inspired by this look, even in the smallest details.
Balloon-Sleeves
Princess of Whales tried the puffy-sleeves back in the 80s, and wouldn’t leave them since. She usually paired them with daring bottoms, which was delicate to pull due to the protocol rules, but she managed to do it with taste and style. Her most iconic puffy sleeves outfit? When she attended a match held on Windsor Castle, wearing a puffy blouse with polka dots, aviator glasses and a long pleated skirt.
In its contemporary version, the blouse with balloon sleeves evolves towards a more minimal style, paired for example with an asymmetrical skirt and sandals with square toe.
Oversized Blazer
In the 1990s, Princess of Wales structured her casual silhouettes with blazers. She liked straight cuts inspired by men’s wardrobe. She also liked structured shoulders. She was often seen wearing it with jeans, a T-shirt, a turtleneck or sweatshirt, and cowboy boots or sneakers.
Today, this oversized piece is running the catwalks. Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Calvin Klein, Vetements ... are all encouraging oversized pieces even if a bit exaggerated. In 2020, we would wear it with a simple t-shirt, a sweatshirt, straight jeans, a pair of sneakers or sandals. Bottom line, we’re copying Diana.
High-waist Jeans
Mom jeans were Diana’s favorite wardrobe piece in the 90s. The late princess used to choose her high-waist jeans in light colors adding to them a shirt slipped under the belt and a blazer to make them look dressier. For an everyday look, she would combine them with a tank top, sweatshirt or teddy, and never without the belt.
For several years, these jeans have been brought to light (after being withdrawn in the 2000s, because they were considered corny). Today, they are worn with sneakers, sweatshirt, or even with sparkly jewelry to give them a chic look.
Off-shoulders
In June 29, 1994, Diana Spencer showed up at the Serpentine Gallery in London in a little black dress signed by Christina Stambolian. It was a short dress, which showcased her sculpted silhouette and bare shoulders. It was known as Diana’s revenge dress. It was a response to Prince Charles confessions of adultery, as written in the columns of The Independent.
However, we don’t need another revengeful situation to see the off-shoulder trend making a comeback trend. An off-shoulder top paired with shorts will sensually reveal the shoulders without overdoing it.
Cowboy boots
Boots were always part of the jeans-blazer combination, which Diana loved to adopt during the 90s. Her boots were high, less pointed and barely heeled than a normal pair of cowboy boots. Princess Diana wore those boots over high-waist mom jeans or loose pants. The goal is to create a structured look with a relaxing twist.
Western boots were back seasons ago, but in a more dramatic way. On the catwalk, cowboy boots have curved heels with a modern twist, often paired with mom jeans and blazer.
