Some suffer from oily hair as a result of hormone changes, however, many bad habits can make it worse. We discussed this matter with hair expert Sylvie from Léonor Greyl Institute.
1-Choosing the wrong shampoo
While it is obvious that overly nourishing shampoos dedicated to dry hair are to be avoided, there are ranges of oily hair products are numerous and diverse.
"In order not to dry the lengths for example, I recommend using a mixed product which will treat the problem of grease at the root while protecting the lengths." recommends Sylvie, a hairdresser at the Leonor Greyl Institute in Paris.
For those who are forced to wash them every day, we will opt for a less aggressive composition; “When the nature of the hair does not allow you to do otherwise, and it happens, it does not matter to wash your hair daily, provided that you choose a suitable product. I prefer shampoos for frequent use rather than mild, because it can be confusing. For example, it is totally not recommended to use a baby shampoo,” Sylvie added. Babies’ hair does not produce sebum, thus the care dedicated to them is not suitable at all.
2-Washing Hair Badly
The way you wash your hair is very important. “it is obvious that you should avoid washing hair with hot water as it risks more sweating.”
Warm water is advisable to rinse your hair, while a cooler temperature is preferred for the last rinse in order to tighten the hair’s cuticles. When applying the shampoo, the expert recommends to put your head forward in order to reach better the roots.
"You really need to wet the roots to remove the sebum and feel the hair crunch under your fingers,” she says.
3-Rubbing instead of massaging
When shampooing, there is a great temptation to vigorously rub your scalp. “Again, the goal is to be gentle. Massaging the scalp will help in relaxing it,” explains Sylvie.
Also, when drying your hair with a towel, "No need to rub hard. The purpose of the spongy effect of the towel is to absorb moisture and it does its job very well.”
4-Tying up your wet hair
It is totally fine if you tend to tie your hair when it is oily, whether in a bun or a braid, according to the expert from Léonor Greyl Institute.
"On the other hand, I strongly advise to avoid tying them when they are wet. They will keep the humidity. In addition, the scalp will be exposed to the limescale in the water which leads to producing sebum.”
5-Using dry shampoo too much
Dry shampoo is the best friend of every woman with oily hair, however you need to be careful with it. “It can be a life-saver before an important evening or meeting, but it is not acceptable to leave it on your head for 24 hours or even 48 hours, as some people do it to skip on washing it.”
The risk? Suffocating the scalp and causing itching while giving only the illusion of clean hair. The expert from the Léonor Greyl Institute also recommends rinsing your hair where the powder has been applied before shampooing again.
6-Avoiding brushing them every night
Maybe most of us brush their hair in the morning, but many of us ignore this step at the end of the day. This is a huge mistake according to Sylvie: "You have to brush your hair every night as you remove your makeup." With a good bristle brush, you’ll be able to get rid of pollution, impurities also residues of styling products such as gel or wax before going to bed. This will let your scalp breathe properly at night and therefore avoid greasing as reaction.
7-Touching hair too often
"Touching your hair will get them dirtier," says the hairdresser. You need to avoid having fun with your hair or relieving stress by touching it all the time. To avoid the greasy fringe effect, ask your hairdresser to cut your hair in a way to limit the temptation to touch it every three minutes. This means a big no to the bangs that will fall easily in your eyes.
