BIKINI EVOLUTION OVER THE LAST 70 YEARS
Let’s celebrate the 70 years of bikini by looking back at the trends from the beginning till this day.
6-July-2016
1940s:
In the 40s, people started to wear two-piece swimsuits, also called bikinis. They were tight, and it was nothing like previous eras. They were made from latex, and women started to put bra cups in the bust to have a better overall silhouette.
1950s:
Brigitte Bardot is famous for her bikinis back in the 50s. At that time, everything had polka dots on it, including bikinis! High-waist two-piece swimsuits were also the trend back then.
1960s:
The fabrics were mainly nylon or Lycra or a mix of the two textures in the 60s. The lower piece of the swimsuit was mainly like a pair of panties; stretch and pull on.
1970s:
From triangle bikinis to push-up and patterned styles, all sorts of bikinis were available by the 70s. Sky is the limit.
1980s:
Sportier shapes became popular in this era with mostly the lycra fabric. We can say the bikinis were less girly at this time.
1990s:
High-waist bikinis made a comeback from the 60s for a more vintage look, but they spiced it up with high-legged bikini bottoms. Does Baywatch ring a bell?
2000s:
The early 2000s marked the drastic shrinking of bikinis. Just look at Kim Kardashian’s barely noticeable two-piece swimsuits she wore at the time.
2010s:
The 2010s bikini fashion was undoubtedly revealing, but people went wild with the trend since they aimed for lots and lots of fringes, neon, bold florals and animal prints.
