Everything started when singer Cher shared over twitter two pictures of a bizarre pair of shoes designed by the London-based shoe designer Ancuta Sarca. The extraordinary shoe is actually a mix between classical pumps and running shoes: Square-toe pumps with neon soles and Nike Branded laces.
Cher captioned her tweet “Un cadeau d’Espagne” which means “A gift from Spain”. Few hours later, the tweet took over twitter and went viral.
Opinions about the pair of shoes seem to be mixed, while some people appreciated the design, others commented negatively on social media, but overall, Cher’s followers came together to one point: The practicality of the shoe.
The name behind the design
Romanian designer Ancuta Sarca is a former fashion student who works in London. Her name appeared in the fashion industry when she participated in “Fashion-East”, a non-profit designer support and showcase program, in 2019. Then, she took part in Spring/Summer 2020 collections in London Fashion week as the first Accessories designer. With all the support Fashion East provided to Ancuta Sarca, she created moccasin-sneakers for men for Fall/Winter 2020 collections.
Overconsumption
The Romanian designer recycles old Nike sneakers to turn them into pumps, while keeping the chic aesthetic side of the pump as well as the sportswear vibe of the sneaker.
Over a year ago, Ancuta Sarca explained to "Hypebae” the relationship between fashion and overconsumption:
“I’m sure most of us understand the fact that we have too many pieces in our wardrobes that we don’t wear, and as a fashion designer, this made me question myself”.
This brand is an innovative and green concept in an era where "eco-responsibility" and "sustainability" are two daily-discussed topics in the fashion industry meanwhile.
For Ancuta Sarca, Designing should not aim to satisfy, it should bring something new to the table instead.
