New York-based menswear label Rowing Blazers, in celebration of its first women’s collection, reissued two iconic Lady Diana sweaters, paying tribute to the 1980’s style and to the princess’s wardrobe.
It is true that Kate Middleton is currently one of the most influential royal figures in fashion, however, Princess Diana left her outstanding, unique and iconic mark in the fashion world, she was the most popular and photographed celebrity among celebrities of that time. Although Princess Diana’s 90’s wardrobe never goes out of style, she’s got a whole 80's wardrobe that is a source of inspiration for today’s stars and brands such as Rowing Blazers. For its first women's collection, the American label which is all about vintage, is re-releasing two famous sweaters worn by Princess Diana Spencer.
"It's a tribute to the early 1980s and to Princess Diana, who perfected the high-low mix, blurred lines between men's and women's clothing, and always dressed with a sense of humor”. says the brand on its shopping site.
In this collection, there are two wool sweaters worn several times by Lady D. The first is a red jumper adorned with “sheep” motifs, designed by the designers of Warm & Wonderful in 1979 and never reissued since 1994. The other is a pale pink sweater stamped “I'm a Luxury” also available for the first time since the 1990s, a collaboration between Gyles & George and Rowing Blazers.
Lady Diana, A Fashion Icon
It is clear that the sweater is important in this collection. And Princess Diana adopted this garment regularly and enjoyed playing with its colors, patterns and shapes. For example, we remember her blue and black belted sweater worn in 1985, her fuchsia cardigan paired with gingham pants or her oversized jersey embroidered with polo details, worn at Aberdeen airport in 1986.
The collection also allows fans to dive in Lady Diana’s iconic silhouettes thanks to a whole range of retro pieces. The collection also suggests a white T-shirt printed with red balloons, a nod to the "British Lung Foundation" T-shirt worn by Lady D in 1988 at the Guards Polo Club in Windsor, which she paired with a large blazer jacket. A collection which proves that Lady Diana remains, even today, a timeless fashion icon.
