In his race for the White House, Joe Biden was not only getting support from his team, from celebrities and from the American citizens who voted for him, the father of four was also getting all the support from his family. The youngest daughter of the President of the United States is a committed woman who is not only a fierce supporter of her father, but she is also an activist who got into fashion for a cause.
Meet Ashley Biden, the youngest and most low-profile of Joe Biden's children.
Although she is the most discreet member of the clan, Ashley Biden has been in the spotlight since her father ran for the White House. Born in 1981, she is the youngest and second daughter of Joe Biden. Ashley did not get to know her sister Naomi who died in 1972 in in a car crash alongside her mother Neilia, the first wife of Biden. A tragedy that explains well the close relationship Ashley has with her father, from whom she inherited the desire to help people. “It's a passion that started very young” she explains in an interview for Glamour magazine,
“my father has always served the general public; and my mother was a teacher in a school - it's in my DNA”.
The youngest of the family is a social worker and an activist
Ashley Biden has been building social commitment since her childhood. “When I was younger I was very fond of animals and once I found out that that Bonne Belle - a cosmetics company for teenagers - was testing its products on animals, I convinced the whole school to write letters to the company". Her interest in human nature led her to Tulane University where she studied anthropology (the interaction between the humanities and the natural sciences), then to one of America’s Ivy Leage universities, the university of Pennsylvania, from which she graduated in 2010.
Ten years later, Joe Biden's daughter has a long resume that highlights her fight for social justice. First as a social worker at the Department of Children, Youth and Family Affairs of the State of Delaware in southern New York, where she developed several programs to support juvenile justice, mental health and the foster and adoption system. Her career took a turn in 2012 - the year of her marriage to Howard Krein, a surgeon - when she joined the Delaware Center for Justice as associate director. She became the executive director 2014. The non-governmental organization fights against the death penalty and in favor of a reform of the American penal system. A cause particularly dear to the Biden clan, as Beau, the eldest of the siblings tragically who died of a brain tumor in 2015, fought hard for it when he was attorney general.
"No one can be so close to his brothers and sister as Ashley can"
This commitment continued after the death of her brother. Ashley Biden decides to continue Beau's fight against income and racial inequalities. "No one can ever be as close to his brothers or sisters as Ashley is” Said Joe Biden to Delaware Today. Words confirmed by his wife, Jill Biden: “She always saw them as role models. No matter where they went, she wanted to follow them, and they were always there for her, protecting her”.
Another passion of hers — fashion — got her thinking how she could create change through clothes, so she launched “Livelihood”, a fashion brand which profits were donated to community associations. Ashley Biden started this project with a series of logo sweatshirts in multiple colors, since sweatshirts are historically linked to the working class: the first hoodies developed by the American Brand Champion in the 1930s were worn by New York workers to protect themselves from the cold. Over the past two decades, the sweatshirt has also become an emblem of the fight against social injustices: “It is something universal. A construction worker in his sixties can wear this staple just like a schoolboy in his schoolyard” said Ashley in an interview with Refinery69.
A line of vests served as an extension to the project, made with organic cotton on American soil and sold on the luxury e-commerce Gilt for between $ 79 and $ 99. In 2017, the first sales reached $ 30,000 in profits, immediately donated to the Delaware Community Foundation, an organization that manages charitable funds.
Joe Biden supported Livelihood telling E! News, "I'm very proud of her. She's been trying to change the world since she was three."
Campaigning for her father
Her activism was seen in her participation in the presidential elections. We rarely saw her, but when she showed up, it was alongside her brother Hunter at the Democratic National Convention, which took place last August. She introduced her father with a loving speech "He will be strong, caring, upright, he will tell you the truth even if you don't want to hear it," said Ashley Biden,
"he will treat everyone with respect no matter who you are, and he will love you with all his heart”.
Her words are followed by a video that featured an old speech by late Beau Biden, also praising his father. A moment that marked the campaign of Joe Biden.
