Today marks the launching of the first professional women’s golf tournament in Saudi Arabia, at King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC), the business hub north of the Red Sea city of Jeddah, and more precisely at Royal Greens Golf and Country Club. The scenic golf course alongside the blue waters of the sea will welcome female golf competitors from all over the world.
Our eyes are on Moroccan golfer Maha Haddioui, since she is the first Arab professional female golfer. Yesterday, she shared a photo of her effortless Golf Swing on Instagram with the caption:
“Looking forward to the next two weeks in Saudi! What a view from the course”
She said in an interview with the BBC: "To be part of something so huge, a moment in history, to me it's a new Saudi when it comes to a lot of things and to be part of that is really big.”
Sponsored by Saudi Arabia's oil company, Aramco, the Aramco Saudi Ladies International tournament will run until November 19, which means seven days of fierce competition between more than 100 female golfers, among them Georgia Hall from England, a major winner at the 2018 AIR Women’s Open, and golfer Amy Boulden, who is “all set and ready to make history!”. The 27 year-old Welsh golfer may be one move ahead of her rivals as she knows the course better, since as an ambassador for Golf Saudi, she has visited it several times in recent years.
Professional women's golf has never taken place before in the kingdom, and this first women's golf event in Saudi Arabia will be have two tournaments: the $1m Aramco Saudi Ladies International from Nov. 12-15, and the $500,000 Saudi Ladies Team International, from Nov. 17-19.
