Under the direction of costume designer Amy Roberts, the reinterpretation of Lady Di’s outfits in the season 4 of The Crown, with Emma Corrin playing the Princess of Wales, is breathtaking.
Everyone is talking about the new season of The Crwon and obsessing over it, and let’s be honest, we are doing the same. Released on Sunday November 15 on Netflix, the fourth season of the hit series The Crown has a new character: Diana Spencer, played by actress Emma Corrin. Besides the striking physical resemblance between the actress and the Princess everyone loves, the choice of costumes was meticulously crafted. Each garment worn by Emma Corrin is a reinterpretation - sometimes very faithful - of the most iconic silhouettes of Lady Di. A long-term job that we owe to costume designer Amy Roberts, who won the 2014 AACTA Award for Best Costume in Television.
Amy Roberts told The Guardian that while some silhouettes have been completely reproduced, others were more inspired by the current wardrobe of the royal family. From her gala dresses to outfits freed from protocol and that caused scandal at the time, Diana Spencer's fascinating wardrobe is reborn in The Crown. One of the looks that have been reproduced almost identically, is the total blue look worn by the Princess of Wales in 1983 during a visit to Australia.
Other times, there was a mixing of various silhouettes of the princess, such as the association of a "big night" look, which Diana Spencer adopted in March 1988, with a red dress that she wore six years earlier in London, at the Royal Opera House. Not to mention the famous David and Elizabeth Emanuel wedding dress, in all respects similar to the one the whole world discovered on July 29, 1981.
