Iconic Fashion Moments That Marked 2020

30-December-2020
From the last show of Jean Paul Gaultier to the generalization of the face mask, we take a look back at the highlights that marked the fashion industry this year.
We will remember Jean Paul Gaultier's farewell to haute couture, the return of Laetitia Casta to the catwalks after ten years of absence, but also the title of "fashion influencer of the year" won by Harry Styles. Joyful events for the most part, despite a heavy health context which has also changed our clothing habits. We have seen the arrival of visors, face masks, the reign of loungewear, and also knitting challenges on TikTok. Here is our list of achievements.
The face mask, the surprise guest
Like a bag or a pair of shoes, the facemask has become an everyday object. If it came with the pandemic, it has also taken a place in fashion. Marine Serre, with her visionary creativity, had shown it before everyone else in September 2019. Today, all the houses offer masks, from the most luxury to the most affordable. We even saw it couture, and shining on Lady Gaga's face at the MTV VMA Awards last August.
Revenge of the Crocs
It's a Crocs rush that took place this year. The brand announced a 73.5% increase in profits in the third quarter. Why suddenly so much love for this comfortable shoe? Justin Bieber revealed a collaboration with the label. But the accessory owes its return on stage to the lockdown which boosted sales.
Anna Wintour in jogging
Who would've believed that? For an interview by video-conference in April 2020, the editor-in-chief of Vogue US swapped her usual Chanel suits for Puma jogging and signed the advent of loungewear. This comfort-based wardrobe has become widely popular with working from home. And loungewear earned its fashion moment at Céline and Saint Laurent. We have also seen many loungewear capsule collections.
The return of Laetita Casta on the catwalks
During his fall-winter 2020-2021 show, French designer Jacquemus asked Laetita Casta to open his show. The French actress has signed her return to the fashion world after ten years away from the catwalks.
Jean Paul Gaultier's last show
Eleven months ago, which felt like an eternity on the scale of the pandemic, Jean Paul Gaultier gave a final round of his long and joyous creative craziness (fifty years of career), surrounded by a crowd of friends at the Théâtre du Châtelet, in Paris. You have to imagine. Anna Wintour was in the front row, Catherine Ringer at the microphone, Mylène Farmer appearing on the runway, Coco Rocha doing a Celtic dance, Amanda Lear in panties ... In short, a fashion show like we rarely see in the fashion industry.
The madness of fashion challenges on TikTok
#Cottagecore, #HarryStylesCardigan ... These challenges signed with a hashtag have set TikTok on fire. For the first one, it is a question of being inspired by “Little House in the Prairie”, by focusing on bucolic outfits. For the other, it is to encourage knitting by trying to knit the same cardigan worn by British singer Harry Style. These challenges were a true creative haven for young people who were escaping from reality during lockdown due to the pandemic.
Harry Styles, fashion icon
If his sense of retro and non-gendered style has inspired a lot this year, especially the younger ones on TikTok, Harry Styles has also been a true fashion influencer. Just 24 hours after the release of his music video Golden, searches for blue and turquoise blazers jumped 52% on Lyst, and searches for yellow bobs by 92%. To end the year in style, the singer became the first male personality to make the front page of the American Magazine Vogue, for the December issue.
Virtual fashion shows
With the crisis, the industry had to rethink its global ecosystem via digital tools. The runways in the lead. Fashion weeks entirely reinvented themselves with the ban on travel due to coronavirus. The classic format of the shows has been replaced by a digital platform. Also, no hushed lounges, handpicked public and first rows filled with celebrities. This year, the silhouettes were discovered from the comfort of our sofas and open to a much larger audience than before.
Lady Di, more icon than ever
Lady Diana's style has always be an iconic inspiration. But 2020 will have been marked by a very particular fascination for the wardrobe of the Princess of Wales. We owe it in particular to the Netflix series The Crown which, for its fourth and final season, introduced the character of Diana Spencer for the first time. Vintage sweatshirt, cyclist, oversized blazer… It's an avalanche of eighties clothing that has come to invade the wardrobe of stylish girls.
Kate Moss's succession
This year Leni Klum, daughter of model Heidi Klum, appeared on the cover of German Vogue in early December. Earlier yet, another "daughter of" entered the fashion industry: Lila Grace Moss. Kate Moss's daughter walked the runway for the first time last October at Paris Fashion Week, during the Miu MiuSpring / Summer 2021 show. Since then, we saw her in a total Dior Homme look during the last men's show of the Dior house signed Kim Jones.
Prince Charles' fashion debut
Prince Charles unveiled his first co-ed collection from 'The Modern Artisan' training program, a project drawn from his meeting with the CEO of Yoox Net-A-Porter Federico Marchetti, in partnership with his association The Prince’s Foundation. This capsule collection, created by design students from the Polytechnic Institute of Milan, offered ten pieces for women and eight for men, all made from natural fibers.
Kamala Harris’s Converse
The candidate wore Converse on the campaign trail, sending Twitter in turmoil. Early September, Joe Biden's running mate went to Wisconsin on her first solo trip as vice-president candidate. She then appeared in a video exiting the plane dressed in slim jeans, a tailored jacket and a pair of low Chuck Taylor. It did not take more than eight seconds for this video to go viral. And that the hashtag #ChuckTaylor has been one of the most searched.
