CHANEL: The dandy derbies in the 2016/17 Cruise collection
18-November-2016
A long masculine jacket and wide-cut trousers with turn-ups, a ruffled skirt in silk tulle
contrasting with a spencer jacket and wide tie, a Panama hat tilted to hide the enigmatic
gaze: this silhouette of CHANEL’s 2016/17 Cruise collection has a masculine-feminine
aesthetic caught between Cuba and Paris. This boyish chic is enhanced by the stately
demeanour of Stella Tennant, heroine of the new advertising campaign shot by Karl
Lagerfeld in the South of France. To complete this dandy allure, Stella Tennant wears derby
shoes whose assumed masculinity electrifies both day and night wear.
The new CHANEL derbies have all the codes of traditional men’s footwear: a wide welt and
sewn effect on natural leather soles, whose raw and striated aspect is reminiscent of wood.
In keeping with the famous two-tone shoe of the House, these derbies and their comfortable
mule version are punctuated with a black leather toe, a signature first made iconic by
Gabrielle Chanel in 1957. Inventively reinterpreted by Karl Lagerfeld, for these derbies this
code is emphasised by a stiffener in black leather. A discreet double C in metal signs both
heels.
The uppers come in a multitude of materials and shades, inspired by the vibrant palette of
colours that light up Havana. Creased leathers are combined with smooth, patent, exotic and
even perforated leathers. Luxurious patchworks stand out against elegant white broderie
anglaise.
With both vintage and contemporary details, these new CHANEL shoes enhance the attitude
of a sophisticated tomboy, whose wardrobe of mixed genes proves once again that its
founder’s philosophy, nourished by the creativity of Karl Lagerfeld, is as modern and as sassy
as ever.
