Rustic materials, contemporary style and large designer rooms is what you will find inside the incredible farmhouse. Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, opened the doors of their farm to AD magazine for a tour.
Far from the traditional oversized properties of Beverly Hills, the couple broke the rule with the contemporary farmhouse. With the support of architect Howard Backen and his team, known for their ability to combine contemporary with rustic, the couple chose to design and build their property from A to Z in Los Angeles. “Building a house from the ground up is no small thing. This was either going to make us or break us” Mila Kunis told AD magazine. This adventure, which lasted five years, was intended to be on a human scale. “We wanted a home, not an estate” the actress explains.
The farm, set on 6 acres of land, which equals 2.4 hectares, is embellished with various structures such as a barn and a barbecue area. “We wanted the house to look like an old barn, something that had been here for decades, that was then converted into a house. But it also had to feel modern and relevant” explains Ashton Kutcher. The result is a clever mix of concrete, wood and glass embellished with velvet sofas.
The barn, made of two huge bay windows, houses an imposing crystal chandelier. “We thought it would be fun to have this incredibly opulent thing hanging in a barn” says Mila Kunis. From the barn to the living room via the kitchen, all the rooms offer light and high ceilings. The outdoor area has not been forgotten with a furnished veranda, a barbecue area and a swimming pool.
Wood, concrete and glass
Having a particular love for technological start-ups, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis got involved personally alongside their architects in the design of this project, each sharing their preferences through mood boards on Pinterest". When we looked at each other’s boards, 90 percent of the images we selected were the same, and most of the houses we pinned were designed by Howard" Kutcher recalls.
The couple's investment reflects their desire to live in a house that looks like them and that meets the expectations of the whole family. “We talked about everything from beam sizes to the details of the cross bracing to the junctures of the wood planks and concrete. These are not the kinds of conversations we have with every client”, explains the architect. Beyond the aesthetic aspect, the two actors wanted a sustainable and caring home for their family. Thus, the house is fully equipped with solar panels.
