Drinking juices makes you lose weight, you don't get a tan with 50 SPF, you have to wash oily hair every day... True or false? We take a deep look at these beauty myths to know which one is actually true.
We heard a lot of myths about hair, diet, makeup… However, we took 10 common beauty myths to see what “the fact” is and what “the fake news” about each one is.
1. Oils Nourish Hair Follicles
Fake news; unless it is infused with nanotechnology (which is rare), a vegetable oil cannot nourish hair from the inside, because its molecules are too big, even the most penetrating ones with short fatty acids, such as the murumuru, babassu, avocado and sunflower oils. However, oils can have a waterproof benefit before shampooing which protects your hair and regulate water absorption, which weakens the hair taking its proteins away and washing out the dyed color.
The Fact; it is wiser to use oil before shampooing, in order to protect your hair and make it softer. When you apply oil all over your hair, it would prevent dryness and protect your colored hair.
2. You can’t rinse Micellar water
Fake news; you usually apply micellar water on your face using cotton pads, it seems logical to let it do all the work. However, micellar water can remain on the surface of the skin and create a feeling of discomfort or tightness on sensitive skin. Therefore, it is recommended to rinse off or evaporate thermal water as a last step of your make-up removal.
The Fact; There are many micellar waters, some of which are made for sensitive skin. Apply micellar water with cotton pad, gently, however, do not rub it on the face!
3. Detox juices make you lose fat
Fake news; drinking juice has never made anyone lose fat and look slim. Detox juices are recommended as part of a monotrophic diet (eating one type of food), in order to put your digestive system to rest for one or two days, before resuming a balanced diet. Drinking detox juices to lose those extra pounds is not only useless, but can cause the body to store more or trigger more cravings!
Fact; You can enjoy drinking fresh fruit or vegetable cold juices, which provide you with fiber and vitamins.
4. Fragrances don’t last
Fake news; our taste changes, and the current trend is heading towards less heavy fragrances unlike the past years, when fragrances were more concentrated and often extracted of animal raw materials. But did you know that when a perfume does not stay at all, it is often due to a dehydrated skin? The more your skin is hydrated, the more the fragrance molecules will stay on your skin.
The fact; There are perfumes with real fragrance sillage that lingers for a long time.
5. You have to cut your hair at 50
Fake news; hairdressers say that there is no age to have long hair, provided you maintain a beautiful texture; a glowy hair and a structured cut. However, you might lose your hair density by the time you turn 50, due to hormones change. Therefore, you think that it is better for you to cut everything fearing from looking even older.
Fact; Before making the cut, give hair treatments a try that add volume and improve your hair texture. Once you apply the treatment, its active ingredients will strengthen the scalp and hair.
6. Match your eye shadow to your eye color
Fake news; if this is true then no one ever would apply coral or pink eye shadow! Just because you have blue eyes doesn't mean you have to do a contrast on the eyelids. On the contrary, an orange eye shadow could give more radiance. No rules can be applied in make-up, as long as colors create a wonderful harmony together.
Fact; this spring take out your colorful palettes, in pastel or smoky. Mix ochre color with navy or pink and almond green eye shadow; the result is bright eye shadow and in good tone.
7. The foundation is tested on the hand
Fake news; although it is a reflex but it is actually a bad idea, as the hand or the inside of the wrist does not reflect the complexion of your face. You need to know your skin complexion to prevent choosing a shade that is too light or too covering. Makeup artists recommend testing the foundation on the earlobe instead.
Fact; We love those new tinted skincare products that work perfectly alone or mixed with a day cream. It would make you look good, guaranteed.
8. You cannot get tanned with SPF 50+
Fake news; you can actually, but slower and safer. There is no sunscreen that is able to block UV rays completely and stopping melanin. The sunscreen SPF 50 reduces 50 times the UV rays which the skin is exposed to, before it gets burned, but it does not prevent UV rays from penetrating the skin.
Fact; we prefer those light mist against UV rays, instead of regular creams, provided that you apply them every hour.
9. Massage rolling is more effective when it hurts
Fake news; it is not true, basically, however it depends on the massager's hand, your sensitivity and your cellulite type: pinching and kneading movements can do a little bad during the first sessions.
Fact; the massager must work more gently in order to prevent any damage to the hypersensitive areas.
10. Oily hair should be washed daily
Fake news; it is completely the opposite, because it triggers the natural production of sebum with flat and oily hair every day. Ideally, you should not wash your hair more than twice a week, to preserve the quality and balance of the scalp.
Fact; try to use dry shampoos, foam or spray, perfect for refreshing and dry cleaning the hair without damaging it. You should spray on the roots and brush it all the way to the ends.
