On July 8th, Fendi presented their fall/winter 2021 collection on their official website. The film was shot by the talented director Luca Guadagnino and featured a vintage collection with a modern twist designed and tailored for today’s women. In this collection, Kim Jones, the artistic director of Fendi’s womenswear and couture, celebrated eternal beauty and elegance with a tribute to Ancient Rome and a revitalized vision of Rome’s futuristic vision through Fendi’s lens. Even the stage and setting emphasized the strong connection between the Roman era, its cultural aspects, and its aesthetics.
The Inspiration
Jones’ collection is inspired by Roman landscapes. He wanted to revive the memory of the city as a cultural crossroad and the center where Eastern and Western trends meet. From mosaic designs to marble-like detailing, every piece has a unique story to tell about Fendi’s Rome. Even the accessories and the jewelry are an ode to the Roman culture.
The Collection
Fendi’s collection is reminiscent of the Roman goddess, yet styled with a modern touch to make the pieces more appealing to today’s modern woman. Draped robes twisted asymmetrically on one side, chic suits, and color-degraded off-shoulder styles with glitters transitioned the collection between day and night clothing smoothly. From ruffled tulle gowns to mother-of-pearl floral detailing and organza ribbons, silhouettes sculpted the body femininely.
Jacquard gowns embellished with artisanal, machine embroidery, and handsewn finishing reflected an intricate craftsmanship technique.
The mesmerizing black coat assembled from almost eight thousand motifs showcased a high degree of precision and handicraft. It was adorned with metallic silver earrings inspired by the Roman era.
Pastel hand-cut silk organza fringes were crafted creatively from a mood board sketch into a dress exuding a delicate pattern. It was paired with satin gloves to add the ballroom feel of fairytale princesses into the collection.
All in all, the collection featured a dramatic blend between the past, the present, and the future. Particularly, how Fendi envisions Rome in the future: a city proud of its antiquity yet invigorated with modern features.
