The Kardashians copied her biker shorts, Emily Ratajkowski copied her little off-shoulder dresses, Hailey Bieber copied her high-waist jeans, and the list goes on and on… Lady Diana’s 90’s wardrobe is trendy as never before. Keep scrolling and take some notes.
Although it’s been more than 20 years since she passed away, her fascinating style remains an inspiration. Fans around the world have really high expectations for The Crown season 4 which will be introducing her character for the first time, and Kristen Stewart will take her role in front of Pablo Larain’s camera. With his film entitled Spencer, named after Diana's daughter, the Chilean filmmaker focuses on a weekend in the 1990s, the one when the Princess of Wales decided to end her marriage to Prince Charles. And to give up becoming queen.
When it comes to her style, the change after her separation from Prince Charles was more of a stylistic renaissance. Freed from protocol, she started wearing staples that showed her legs, her lower neck, her shoulders... she was finally free. The Princess of Wales went for some staples that are trendy today among which the oversized blazer, the sweatshirts with logos, the high-waist wide jeans, the cycling shorts and the puffy sleeves. Not only staples that showed the style icon she really is, but that showed to the world that Lady Diana is finally free.
Her style, rooted in the fashion of the 1990s, continues to inspire today. On the catwalks, nods to the Princess of Wales are many. And on Instagram, we can no longer count the number of accounts dedicated to her allure of the 1990s. Nor the tributes to her looks, like that of the French edition of Vogue in which Hailey Bieber reproduced Lady D’s most iconic nineties outfits.

The Cyclist Short
Princess D is the coolest and most iconic royal. The Princess of Wales dared to wear these shorts as a sign of freedom and liberation right after her separation from Prince Charles. She wore these shorts to her aerobic classes and usually paired them with white socks. Right when sportswear garments made their huge comeback, creatives and designers started drawing inspiration from princess Diana. On the catwalks, this technical garment came to an urban vibe wardrobe that is mainly all about loose men's shirts, suit jackets cut in large widths or even high heeled boots. Therefore, it’s a question of breaking out sporting codes in 2020 and rebalancing the molded bottom by playing on the oversize.

The vintage sweatshirt
She put on her sweatshirts on her way to the Harbor Club, the gym she frequented in Chelsea, London, or to accompany her son, William to the Guards Polo Club. High-waist jeans, a fleece sweatshirt and a blazer with wide shoulders, a cap and her hands in her pockets, are all it took for an effortless elegance. Influencers on Instagram are usually posing this way, many of whom are inspired by this look.

Puffy sleeves
The Princess of Wales wore the puffy sleeves in the 1980s, and she remained loyal to this trend. They have the advantage of combining a certain sartorial vibe with a fashion boldness. Her most striking look? When she attended a polo match at Windsor Castle. The Princess of Wales then wore a puffed polka-dot blouse, aviator glasses and a long pleated skirt.
In its contemporary version, the puffy-sleeved blouse goes best with minimal staples, for example with an asymmetrical skirt and square-toed sandals.

The Oversized Blazer
This garment is all over the runways today: Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Calvin Klein and more, and all of them embraced the oversized version of the blazer. It is best styled with a simple T-shirt, a sweat-shirt, straight-cut jeans, copying Lady Diana.

The High-waist Jeans
In the 1990’s, the mom jeans were essential in Lady D’s wardrobe, as she styled the high-waist and light shades of them with a shirt tucked underneath, a belt and a blazer to make the jeans look more formal. In her casual version, she styled them with a tank top or a sweatshirt.

Off-shoulders
In June 1994, Lady Diana appeared at the Serpentine Gallery in London wearing a little black dress, signed by Christina Stambolian. The short dress and the bare shoulders accentuated her appearance. With an off-shoulder top and some shorts, you’re attractive and sexy.

The Cow-boy boots
The cowboy boots are part of the jeans-blazer combination Lady Diana was well-known for in the nineties. Her boots are long with a little heel. She wore them over her famous high-waist jeans or under some large pants.
These Western boots made their comeback a few seasons earlier in a more contemporary version. On the runways, we’ve seen them with mom jeans and blazer also.
