5 Things You Didn’t Know About Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris made history this weekend becoming the first woman and the first woman of color to be elected as the Vice President of the United States. The daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants chose to honor women in her speech ensuring that she’s the first but not the last, with a speech that brought tears of joy and pride to many women and girls who were watching her. You’ve probably been reading a lot about her political journey and her race along with Joe Biden to the presidency, but what about some information you don’t know about her? Here are 5 things you didn’t know about Kamala Harris.
She served as the President of Black Law Students Association at her law school
We weren’t so shocked. Harris took this position at University of California Hastings College of Law to advocate and fight for “greater campus diversity as part of the Legal Education Opportunity Program”.
She loves Converse Sneakers
Like no other woman before her, Kamala Harris has worn sneakers on the campaign trail. The Democratic Vice President, who’s been running for this position for so long now, wore her Converse trainers to step off the jet planes when she was a vice-presidential candidate.
"Chuck Taylors are trending lol" her sister Maya Harris tweeted after a video of her arrival in Milwaukee went viral. We admit that we are converse lovers, just not as much as Kamala is. She even wore them to events and talk-shows. "I just love them!" she told the Desus & Mero hosts, lifting her Converse sneakers up in the air to prove it. "It's either Chucks or heels... Always has been."
Is this love for converses staying now that she’s the vice president?
She was close to Biden's late son Beau
Harris and the younger Biden, Beau, who died of brain cancer in 2015, were close political allies and friends. They worked together on many issues, particularly during the Great Recession of 2008. "There were periods, when I was taking the heat," Harris wrote in her 2019 memoir, "when Beau and I talked every day, sometimes multiple times a day."
She loves to cook
For female politicians, talking about cooking can be tense, but Kamala Harris broke that rule too. The pandemic and lockdown were a chance for her to go through her cooking skills and as busy as she is, the new vice president cooks for her family and friends. She told Glamour Magazine last May:
"It is a tradition that is very close to my heart to only have a really good home-cooked meal on a Sunday”.
She didn’t endorse Joe Biden till March 8
She kept delaying the endorsement until she had to face the fact that there were no more women left in the race and that Joe Biden’ nomination was certain. Six days after the California primary, she endorsed Joe Biden saying he was a leader who could “unify the people.”
